iPhone Duo trade-in: what Apple gives for your old iPhone
Apple Trade In pays up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, $785 for an iPhone 17 Pro and $585 for an iPhone 17 or iPhone Air in the US, as listed on Apple's trade-in page on October 9, 2026. Put against the $1,999 iPhone Duo, the best case brings the 256GB model down to $1,114. Older iPhones get a quote in Apple's estimator; values depend on the model, storage and condition. Here is what Apple lists in seven countries, how the trade-in works with a preorder, and what to do before you send the phone.
What the Duo costs after a US trade-in
| You trade in | Apple's top value | iPhone Duo 256GB ($1,999) after credit |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to $885 | $1,114 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | Up to $785 | $1,214 |
| iPhone Air | Up to $585 | $1,414 |
| iPhone 17 | Up to $585 | $1,414 |
| Google Pixel 9 Pro | Up to $275 | $1,724 |
| OnePlus 13 | Up to $250 | $1,749 |
| Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra | Up to $125 | $1,874 |
"Up to" is the value for a phone in good working condition with the highest storage. Apple's page lists only the models above for the US; an iPhone 16, 15 or 14 is still accepted, and you see its value once you enter the model and answer the condition questions. Apple says trade-in values "vary based on the condition, year, and configuration" and that not every device gets a credit; those that get none can be recycled for free. The 512GB Duo is $2,199, 1TB is $2,599 and 2TB is $3,199, so subtract the same credit from those (see the Duo price in 40 countries).

How a trade-in works with a Duo preorder
- Add the trade-in at checkout. When preorders open on October 16 (5 a.m. PT, see the time in your country), you pick your old phone's model and answer a few condition questions. Apple's Get Ready page, open from October 12, lets you save these choices in advance (how Get Ready works).
- Keep using your old phone. You send it only after the Duo arrives. Apple either mails you a prepaid trade-in kit or emails drop-off instructions.
- Send it within 14 days of receiving the Duo. The estimate is valid for 14 days after you receive the new phone, Apple says. The whole process "generally takes 2 to 3 weeks".
- Get the credit. If you paid in full, the credit goes back to your payment method after Apple receives the phone and confirms its condition, usually within 3 to 5 business days of receipt. If the phone is worth more than what you bought, the difference comes as an Apple Gift Card.
If the phone arrives in a worse condition than you described, Apple adjusts the value and contacts you before going ahead. All of this is from the FAQ on Apple's trade-in page.
Online or in a store?
Both work. In an Apple Store a Specialist checks the phone on the spot and you get the credit immediately, so there is no waiting and no mailing. The in-store value can differ from an online estimate if the condition does not match what you described. For a launch-day Duo, the in-store route only works if you have a pickup reservation or the store has stock.
Before you hand over the old phone
- Back it up (iCloud or a computer) and move your eSIM to the Duo; the Duo is eSIM only.
- Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My, then erase the phone (Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone). Apple's page links to its own guide for this.
- You do not need to send the charger, cable or case. Apple will recycle accessories if you include them.
- An Apple engraving does not reduce the value; third-party engraving may.
Quick answers
- How much is my iPhone worth toward an iPhone Duo? In the US, up to $885 for a 17 Pro Max, $785 for a 17 Pro, $585 for an iPhone 17 or Air. Older models are quoted in Apple's estimator.
- Do I lose my old phone before the Duo arrives? No. You send it after the Duo is delivered, within 14 days.
- Can I trade in an Android phone? Yes. Apple US lists Samsung, Google and OnePlus models; the values are much lower than for a recent iPhone.
- Is the credit the same in every country? No. Apple sets values per country; Germany and the UK are highest and India lowest for a 17 Pro Max.
- What about carrier offers? Carrier trade-in deals at Apple are tied to a plan and paid as monthly bill credits over a contract. This page covers Apple's own trade-in, which has no plan or contract.
