World Mental Health Day falls on Saturday, October 10, 2026. This year's theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change". The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), which started the day in 1992, announced it on August 11, and the World Health Organization uses the same theme for its 2026 campaign.

What the theme means

"Lived experience" is what you know because you went through something yourself, not because you read or heard about it. Here it means people who have lived with a mental health condition.

WHO says such people are often asked to tell their stories, then left out when decisions are made. The 2026 campaign asks for more than listening: people with lived experience should help shape the policies, services and decisions that affect them, for example by helping design services, running peer support and holding systems to account.

WFMH also ties the day to WHO's call to move mental health care out of large, long-stay institutions and into community services, set out in WHO's 2025 policy guidance.

Why it matters

More than a billion people live with a mental health condition, according to WHO figures published in September 2025. Anxiety and depression are the most common, and mental health conditions are the second biggest cause of long-term disability worldwide.
