World Food Day 2026 falls on Friday 16 October. This year's theme, set by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."

What the 2026 theme means

The FAO's argument is simple: the world already grows enough food for everyone, but not everyone can get it. The theme asks how new ideas can close that gap. The FAO says innovation is not only high technology. Its examples include:

It also stresses who should be part of it: farmers, fishers, herders and foresters, especially women, young people and Indigenous Peoples.

The numbers behind the theme

Why 16 October?

World Food Day marks the founding of the FAO on 16 October 1945. Today, events are held in nearly 150 countries, from marches and markets to school contests.
