World Animal Day 2026: theme, date and what it means

World Animal Day 2026 falls on Sunday 4 October. This year's theme is "See the World Through Their Eyes".

What the 2026 theme means

The organisers pick the theme from ideas sent in by the public. This year's came from Zoe, from the UK. Her point: people make decisions about the climate and the future from a human point of view, but animals live with the results too. The theme asks you to look at those choices from an animal's side (World Animal Day).

The official 2026 artwork, by illustrator Emma Jayne, follows the same idea. It looks out through a fish-shaped lens at the Coral Triangle, the sea around Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Philippines, and shows healthy coral next to bleached coral. The organisers note that coral reefs support around a quarter of all marine life while covering about 1% of the ocean floor.

Who runs World Animal Day

The first World Animal Day was held in Berlin in 1925 by Heinrich Zimmermann, so 2025 was its 100th year. Since 2003 it has been coordinated by the Naturewatch Foundation, an animal welfare charity in the UK. It is marked every year on 4 October, and anyone can register an event on the official website.
