The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The United Nations has set a three-year theme for 2026 to 2028, "United for Peace and Human Rights", and this year's focus is "Safe Homes for All" (United Nations).

What "Safe Homes for All" means

The UN puts housing at the centre this year: without a safe and stable home, getting health care, schooling and work becomes much harder. It says more than 2.8 billion people worldwide face some form of inadequate housing, and that people already living in poverty carry most of that burden.

The 2026 concept note asks for action in three areas:

  1. Make safe housing a human-rights priority in public policy and budgets.
  2. Design policies with people experiencing poverty, not just for them, involving them from start to finish.
  3. Find the money for safe, accessible and affordable homes, so no one is left behind.
