Boss's Day 2026: Date, Ideas and What to Write in a Card
National Boss's Day is on Friday, October 16, 2026. It's always October 16, and when that falls on a weekend it's marked on the closest working day (Hallmark). It isn't a public holiday: work goes on as normal. It's simply a day for a team to thank a manager who has treated them well, and for most teams a signed card and a few kind words are plenty.
| Year | October 16 falls on |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Friday |
| 2027 | Saturday, so usually marked on Friday, October 15 |
| 2028 | Monday |
| 2029 | Tuesday |
Where Boss's Day came from
Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary at State Farm Insurance in Deerfield, Illinois, registered "National Boss' Day" with the US Chamber of Commerce in 1958. Her boss was her father, and she picked October 16 because it was his birthday. She felt younger employees often didn't see how hard their managers worked. In 1962 the governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, officially proclaimed the day. Greeting cards came much later: Hallmark first made Boss's Day cards in 1979 (Wikipedia, Hallmark, CBS News).
It started in the United States, but Hallmark says it is now also marked in countries such as England, Australia and South Africa.
The one rule: keep it small and shared
Boss's Day has critics, and they have a point. Traditional workplace etiquette says gifts should go from a manager to the team, not the other way, so that nobody feels they have to buy something for the person who decides their pay. The workplace advice writer Alison Green made this argument in US News. So if your team marks the day:
- Make it a group thing, from the whole team, not one person.
- Keep any spending tiny and never make chipping in compulsory. A card costs almost nothing and is the part people remember.
- Leave nobody out: pass the card around to everyone, including remote colleagues.
- Doing nothing is fine. If your workplace doesn't mark it, you aren't being rude.
10 simple Boss's Day ideas
- A card signed by the whole team, with one line from each person.
- A handwritten note naming one specific thing your manager did that helped you this year.
- Morning coffee, tea or pastries for the team, so the day is shared, not just about one person.
- A team lunch where everyone pays their own way, or the company covers it.
- A small desk plant, like a succulent, from the team.
- A "wins of the year" list: three or four things the team achieved together, on one page.
- Public thanks in the team meeting or group chat. It costs nothing and often means the most.
- A recommendation on LinkedIn or a kind word to their own manager, if you genuinely mean it.
- A book they've mentioned wanting to read.
- A donation to a charity the team picks together, in the team's name.
What to write in a Boss's Day card
The best line is specific: name something real. If you're stuck, start from one of these and change it to fit.
Short and simple
- Thank you for your support this year. It made a real difference.
- Thanks for always making time for our questions.
- Happy Boss's Day, and thank you for being fair with all of us.
- Thank you for trusting us to get the work done.
- Thanks for having our backs when it counted.
For a group card
- From all of us: thank you for leading a team people actually want to be part of.
- We don't say it enough, so here it is in writing: thank you.
- Thanks for the clear goals, the honest feedback and the patience.
- A great year for the team starts with a great manager. Thank you.
- Thank you for the way you celebrate our wins and help us through the hard weeks.
For a new boss
- You've only been here a few months, and it already feels like a better place to work. Thank you.
- Thanks for taking the time to get to know the team. We're glad you're here.
- Thank you for listening before changing things. It showed.
For a boss who helped you grow
- Thank you for pushing me to try things I didn't think I was ready for.
- I've learned more this year than in any other. Thank you for teaching me.
- Thank you for the advice that made me better at my job.
Light and friendly
- Thanks for keeping meetings short. We noticed, and we're grateful.
- Happy Boss's Day to the person who answers our messages faster than anyone.
- Thank you for keeping calm on the deadlines that kept us up at night.
- You make Mondays easier. That's not a small thing.
What to avoid
- Expensive or personal gifts such as clothes, perfume or jewellery.
- Alcohol. Plenty of people don't drink, and it's a poor fit for work.
- Pressure to pay. A collection should be optional, and nobody should know who gave what.
- Jokes at the boss's expense in a public card. Save the teasing for people who know it's welcome.
Quick answers

Friday, October 16, 2026.
Is Boss's Day a day off?
No. It's an unofficial observance, not a public holiday, so offices, banks and schools are open.

No. A card or a sincere thank-you is enough, and many workplaces don't mark the day at all.
Is it Boss's Day, Bosses Day or Boss Day?
All three are used. "National Boss's Day" and "Bosses Day" are the most common spellings.
Is there a day for employees too?
Yes. Employee Appreciation Day falls on the first Friday in March, and Administrative Professionals Day is in late April. Many managers use Boss's Day to thank their own team back.
