If you asked for a tax extension, your 2025 federal return is due Thursday, October 15, 2026. An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay, so any tax you owed was due back on April 15. If you didn't get an extension, your return was already late in April, so file as soon as you can (see below).

The quick version

Did you actually get an extension?

You get the extension to October 15 if you did one of these by the April filing date (IRS):

  1. Paid online and checked the box saying the payment was part of filing for an extension. You get a confirmation number and don't need a separate form.
  2. Used IRS Free File to request the extension electronically. There is no income limit for extensions.
  3. Filed Form 4868 by mail, with an IRS e-file partner or through a tax professional.

Check your records for a confirmation number or an IRS notice. If you can't find one and you didn't file or pay by April 15, treat your return as late.

What happens if you miss October 15

Two separate penalties can apply (failure to file and failure to pay, both from the IRS):

PenaltyRateCap
Failure to file5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late25%
Failure to pay0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month25%
Both in the same month4.5% failure to file plus 0.5% failure to payThe filing penalty maxes out after 5 months; the payment penalty keeps going
Return more than 60 days lateMinimum failure-to-file penalty of $525 or 100% of the tax due, whichever is lessFor returns due after December 31, 2025

Interest also builds on any unpaid tax from the April due date. See the IRS's penalties page.

The IRS can waive the failure-to-file penalty if you show it was due to reasonable cause. If you can't pay in full, still file on time: filing by the deadline avoids the 5% penalty, and if you have an approved payment plan the failure-to-pay rate drops to 0.25% a month for people who filed on time.

If you haven't filed yet

  1. Gather your forms: W-2s, 1099s, and records of deductions and credits.
  2. Pick a way to file. Free File works if your income is within the limit. Tax software and professionals are the other options.
  3. Pay what you can with the return, using IRS Direct Pay or another payment option. Ask about a payment plan for the rest.
  4. File before midnight on October 15, or mail it with a postmark of that date or earlier.
  5. Keep your confirmation or certified-mail receipt.

Never filed for earlier years either? The IRS says to file past-due returns as soon as possible. See its guide to filing past-due returns.

Quick answers

What is the tax extension deadline in 2026?

Thursday, October 15, 2026, for the 2025 tax year.

Can I still get an extension?

No. The extension had to be requested by April 15. If you didn't, file as soon as possible and pay what you owe to limit the penalties.

Does an extension give me more time to pay?

No. It only gives you more time to file. Tax you owe was due on April 15.

What time is the deadline?

Electronic filers should submit before midnight local time on October 15. Mailed returns need a postmark of October 15 or earlier.

Is it free to file at the last minute?

Yes, if you qualify for IRS Free File. Guided software is for adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, and Fillable Forms are for any income.

What if I'm owed a refund?

The late-filing and late-payment penalties are a percentage of tax owed, so if you owe nothing there is generally no penalty. File anyway to claim your refund.
