Why a rise is expected
- The last vote was split. In September the Monetary Policy Committee voted 6–3 to hold Bank Rate at 3.75%. The three other members voted to raise it to 4% (Bank of England).
- Inflation is rising. CPI inflation rose to 3.1% in August. The Bank said higher energy prices from the conflict in the Middle East would push it up further, and that the longer the volatility lasts, the bigger the effect on inflation (Bank of England). Economists expect September's figure, due on 21 October, to show 3.4% (see our page on the next UK inflation figures).
- Markets have priced it in. On 19 October traders were pricing roughly 95% odds of a 0.25-point rise on 5 November, and another by February (investingLive).
What a rise would mean for you
- Tracker mortgages follow Bank Rate, so a 0.25-point rise usually feeds through to your payments quickly.
- Standard variable rate mortgages often move too, at the lender's choice.
- Fixed-rate mortgages don't change until the fix ends, but new fixed deals tend to price in expected rises ahead of time.
- Savings rates may rise, though banks don't always pass on the full increase.
