Source: CBS News, citing Disney, except the two bundles with HBO Max, which come from the plan table of SmartTVs.org. Disney also raised prices on other plans that include ESPN, HBO Max, NFL+ and Hulu with Live TV, Gray News reports; the plans with NFL+ and Hulu + Live TV are not in this table, so check Disney’s own price page for them. The ad-free plans rose 13%, and this is the fourth price rise for the two services in four years, according to Gray News, which cites Variety for the view that the pricing pushes customers toward the bundles.
When does your bill change?
- New subscribers: the new prices applied from September 23 (TheWrap, CBS News).
- Existing subscribers: the new price starts with your first billing cycle on or after October 21, Disney+’s Help Center says, as quoted by SmartTVs.org. TheWrap says the increase appears on existing customers’ next monthly bill. For example, if your plan renews on October 15 you pay the old price once more, and if it renews on October 22 you pay the new price on that charge.
- Paying through an app store or another partner: the price can differ from Disney’s own tables, and your receipt shows what you pay (a standing note on Disney’s price page, quoted by SmartTVs.org).
Your next renewal date is in your account settings, and it is the only way to know which billing cycle is yours.
How to pay less
- Watch both catalogs? Two standalone plans with ads cost $24.98 a month ($12.49 twice), while the bundle with ads is $12.99. Two ad-free plans cost $42.98, while the ad-free bundle is $21.99, a difference of $20.99 a month.
- Keep one app? The plan with ads is $12.49 a month, $9 less than the ad-free plan at $21.49.
- Leaving? Cancel before your first billing date on or after October 21, so that charge is not made at the new price (SmartTVs.org).
ESPN prices changed too
ESPN raised its own streaming prices on September 17, TheWrap reported: ESPN Select went from $12.99 to $13.99 a month and ESPN Unlimited from $29.99 to $31.99. The ESPN Unlimited bundles with Disney+ and Hulu stay at $35.99 (with ads) and $44.99 (no ads), as in the table above.
