Discord Age Checks: Do You Have to Verify Your Age?
Most Discord users will not have to verify their age. Discord began sorting every account into adult, teen or unconfirmed on September 22, 2026, and says more than 90% of users will be placed automatically, without an ID or a selfie, according to The Next Web. People the system cannot place, or who land in the wrong group, can confirm their age in several ways.
What changed
- Three groups. Adult, teen (ages 13 to 17) or unconfirmed. The change was announced in a blog post by Discord's chief technology officer, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, and was set to reach accounts over several days.
- Not everywhere. The age estimate is not used in the UK or Australia, where Discord already runs separate systems to meet local rules.
- A second attempt. Discord announced global teen settings in February and delayed them after users worried about mandatory face scans and ID uploads, Techlicious reports. The Next Web adds that the delay was used to add more ways to verify age.
How Discord decides
It uses signals from the account itself, such as how long it has existed, which servers it is in and how active it is. Discord says the model does not read messages, calls or other content. Adults see no change.
What changes for teen and unconfirmed accounts
- Teens' message requests from people they do not know go to a separate inbox.
- Sensitive images are blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers and channels are closed.
- Teens' full profiles are visible only to friends and members of small shared servers.
Vishnevskiy told GamesBeat that "even if you're classified as a teen, you can keep using Discord the way you want." The same report says age-verified comment tags, which communities had adapted as spoiler tags, are replaced by dedicated spoiler channels.
How to check your group and fix it
Open User Settings and look under Account Status to see where your account landed. If it is wrong, or you are asked to confirm, Techlicious lists these ways to do it:
- a credit card charge handled by Stripe (Discord says it never sees the card number)
- an age range already stored with the Apple App Store or Google Play
- a Google Wallet ID
- a video selfie processed on your device
- an ID scan together with a selfie
- AgeKey, a reusable age credential
Discord's partners return only an age group and delete what they receive, The Next Web reports. Discord also stopped having people review ID documents by hand after a 2025 breach at a former support vendor. If you already confirmed your age, you do not have to do it again.
Why now
Laws on age checks are spreading. A Texas court ordered Discord in July to use the same system it runs in the UK, and similar requirements are taking effect in Brazil, according to Techlicious.
