What happens on the day

  1. 2:00 p.m. Eastern: the FOMC statement is posted on federalreserve.gov. It gives the new target range for the federal funds rate, the vote, and a short view of the economy.
  2. 2:30 p.m.: the Fed chair reads a statement and takes questions from reporters, usually for about an hour. It is streamed live on the Fed's website and YouTube channel.
  3. Three weeks later: the minutes come out, with more detail on the discussion.

This page does not predict the decision. Banks and news outlets publish their expectations in the days before the meeting; the Fed itself says nothing in the "blackout" period before it.

How the rate got here

At its previous meeting, on 15 and 16 September 2026, the committee raised the target range by a quarter point to 3.75% to 4%. Its statement said economic activity was "expanding at a solid pace" and that domestic spending had been resilient, while uncertainty remained elevated partly because of geopolitical developments. The vote was unanimous.
