Kenya YouTube 5% Tax: KRA PIN, AdSense Payment Date
Google will withhold a 5% Kenyan tax from the YouTube earnings of AdSense accounts based in Kenya, starting with the September 2026 earnings it pays out in October, between Wednesday, October 21 and Monday, October 26. Creators had to enter a verified KRA PIN in AdSense for YouTube by October 1, or Google said payments may be held until one is verified (Kenyans.co.ke, Business Daily). Google’s payment rules say changes that remove a payment hold must be finished on or before the 20th to be paid that month (AdSense Help). October 20 is Mashujaa Day, a public holiday in Kenya, so fix any PIN or payment problem before then.
The key dates
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fri, Aug 28 | Google emails Kenyan creators: enter your Kenyan PIN in AdSense for YouTube by October 1; the 5% applies first to September 2026 earnings paid out in October. | Kenyans.co.ke |
| Thu, Oct 1 | Deadline to enter a verified KRA PIN. Without one, Google said payments may be held: earnings keep accruing but payments stop until a verified PIN is provided. | Business Daily |
| Oct 7 to 12 | AdSense adds the previous month’s finalised YouTube earnings (September) to your balance. | AdSense Help |
| Tue, Oct 20 | Last day for changes that remove a payment hold, if you want to be paid in October. It is also Mashujaa Day, a public holiday in Kenya. | YouTube Help |
| Wed, Oct 21 to Mon, Oct 26 | Google issues the payment, and a “Payment pending” line appears. By bank transfer (EFT) allow up to 7 business days to arrive; by wire up to 15 business days. | AdSense Help |
| Nov 7 to 12, Nov 20, Nov 21 to 26 | The next cycle: October earnings are finalised, the cut-off is Friday, November 20, and payments are issued from the 21st. November 21 is a Saturday, so payments may start on Monday, November 23. | AdSense Help |
The dates from the 7th to the 26th are Google’s general AdSense for YouTube payment calendar, which applies in every country; we found no separate Kenya calendar. The exact payment time depends on your time zone and payment method (YouTube Help).
What the deduction is
Google told creators that “each month, Google will withhold a 5 per cent Kenyan tax on finalised YouTube earnings along with any applicable U.S. taxes”, as quoted by Kenyans.co.ke. “Finalised earnings” is the figure AdSense posts to your balance after the month closes. Google will also send KRA monthly reports with each creator’s gross earnings, the tax withheld, address and PIN, The Standard reported.
It is not a new law. The Finance Act 2023 created a withholding tax on income from digital content monetisation, at 5% for residents and 20% for non-residents (EY). What changed is that Google now deducts the tax before it pays you, where income from international platforms used to be reported mostly by the creators themselves (The Standard).
| Finalised YouTube earnings (KSh or any currency) | 5% withheld | Left before other deductions |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 50 | 950 |
| 10,000 | 500 | 9,500 |
| 50,000 | 2,500 | 47,500 |
| 100,000 | 5,000 | 95,000 |
| 500,000 | 25,000 | 475,000 |
Kenyans.co.ke gives the same example for KSh100,000 of finalised earnings: KSh5,000 withheld and KSh95,000 left before any other deductions. US tax is separate: YouTube says your estimated earnings can be adjusted for taxes on earnings from US viewers (YouTube Help), and The Standard put that withholding at up to 30% on the share of earnings from US viewers. Your bank or wire fees come on top.
What to do now
- Find your KRA PIN. It is on your PIN certificate. To print it again, sign in to iTax, open the Registration tab, choose “Reprint my Certificate”, pick the applicant type and submit (KRA).
- No PIN yet? On iTax choose “Individual” as the taxpayer type and “Online Form” as the mode, fill in Section A (basic information), Section B (obligation details) and Section C (source of income), then submit. KRA sends an acknowledgment receipt with a reference number while the application is approved (KRA). Residents need their National ID or Alien ID details, plus an employer’s PIN if employed or business registration details if in business (KRA).
- Enter it in AdSense for YouTube. Google’s notice asks for your Kenyan PIN, which has 11 characters (The Standard). TechTrendsKE reports that the tax-information step also asks for your entity type and tax status, including withholding tax and VAT details.
- Watch your Payments page. A “Payment pending” line appears when the payment is issued between the 21st and the 26th (AdSense Help).
- Keep records. KRA says the payer generates a withholding tax certificate on iTax once it pays the tax over, and the certificate is sent to you (KRA). The reports we read do not say how Google will issue certificates, so check your iTax account before you file.
If your PIN was not verified by October 1, we found no separate Kenya rule from Google for the hold. Its general rule is that a hold removed after the 20th means no payment that month: the balance rolls over to the next month (YouTube Help). Treat October 20 as the safe cut-off.
Is the 5% a final tax?
Not in general. KRA says withholding tax is claimable by the payee when filing the annual return and “is not an additional tax”, and that it is final only in a few cases (payments to non-residents without a permanent establishment in Kenya, and for residents winnings, qualifying interest, qualifying dividends and pensions) (KRA). EY, writing about the 2023 law, said that for residents it is an advance tax, so they must still file returns and pay any tax due (EY). KRA says individual returns for a year of income can be filed from January 1 to June 30 of the following year (KRA).
The deduction still cuts the cash you receive each month, and your final tax depends on your whole income and expenses. This page explains what Google, KRA and the reports say; it is not tax advice, so ask KRA or an accountant about your own case.
Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
- Meta (Facebook and Instagram): began withholding 5% from payments to Kenyan creators in January 2026 (Business Daily).
- TikTok: began asking Kenyan creators for tax and residency details in mid-September. The reported rates are 5% for residents and 20% for non-residents, but TikTok has not said when deductions begin or which payouts they cover (Citizen Digital, September 17).
- Other income: Google’s 5% applies to YouTube AdSense earnings. Money from brand deals or other sources is not deducted by Google, and its tax treatment is separate.
What is not settled
- A pause. The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya asked the Treasury and KRA to halt collection until they consult the industry. TechTrendsKE noted that the request does not suspend the tax or change the law (TechTrendsKE, September 1). We found no report of a pause as of October 15.
- Where it shows. We found no Google page or report that says where in AdSense the 5% will appear, so read your October payment line items when they post.
