Ghana’s National Service Authority (NSA) has extended the 2026/2027 national service registration deadline to Friday, October 23, 2026, eight days later than the original Thursday, October 15. The extension is for eligible personnel who have not completed their registration, the NSA said in a statement dated October 16.

The statement says it gives these personnel “an additional opportunity” to finish. As 3News points out, it does not say what happens to anyone who misses October 23, beyond warning of “inconvenience”, and it does not say whether there will be another extension. If you have been posted, do the steps below on the NSA portal, posting.gnsa.gov.gh, and do not wait for the last day.

Who has to do national service

Under Section 29(1) of the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), a Ghanaian citizen who has completed a course of study at a tertiary education institution is qualified to do national service (3News, Pulse Ghana). In its September 30 release the NSA said 149,907 prospective personnel had been submitted, 95,689 verified, 95,197 had completed registration and 70,072 had been posted in the first batch.

Private applicants, graduates trained abroad and past defaulters, meaning people who skipped an earlier service year, use a separate entry on the portal, “Private Applicants, International Students & Defaulters” (NSS Portal). The October 16 statement does not name this group.

What to do before October 23

The October window is the stage after posting, not the August enrolment. The NSA’s September 30 release and Pulse Ghana’s guide describe it as three steps on the portal at posting.gnsa.gov.gh:

  1. Check your posting and print the letter. Log in to see where you were posted (Pulse Ghana).
  2. Get the letter endorsed at the place of posting, book a validation appointment on the portal, and attend it with the endorsed letter and any identification the NSA asks for.
  3. Share the validated copies: one for your place of posting, one for your District Office and one for yourself. Then report to your place of posting.

If you have not been posted yet, the NSA said on October 12 that postings would continue in batches and that all eligible applicants would be posted “in due course”, with more placements in the private sector (CitiNewsroom).

The August enrolment (closed)

Before posting came the enrolment, which opened on August 12 and was due to close on August 26 (Pulse Ghana, MyJoyOnline):

The October 16 statement does not say whether anyone who missed that enrolment can still join. Private applicants, graduates trained abroad and past defaulters have a separate entry on the portal (see above).

If your Ghana Card and school records do not match

In August the NSA opened a help desk at its Accra headquarters, with officials of the National Identification Authority and the Ghana Publishing Company, for graduates whose names or dates of birth differ between the Ghana Card and their school records (MyJoyOnline). We found no notice that the desk is still open, so use the support channels listed on the portal.

Why it matters

The NSA’s September 30 release reminded the public that, under Section 40 of the Act, an employer may not employ a person who is qualified for national service but has not done it, unless the person is exempt, and that an employer who does so faces a penalty of 5,000 penalty units. It added that the Registrar of Companies will not register a company, partnership or business name for such a person (3News).

This page is not an official NSA notice. Check the portal and the NSA’s own channels before you pay anything.
